The Bite

Today I needed a quick lunch so I headed over to Field’s Pharmacy in order to get a tuna salad on toast.

Field’s is just like stepping back into the 1950’s.  And looking around at the customers, you can almost imagine most of them were probably sitting at the counters circa 1948, drinking sweet tea and chatting.

Field’s still has a lunch counter and a little seating area with these chairs with mesh backs that look as ancient as the pharmacy iteself.  It has a little salad bar, daily specials, wonderful milkshakes and  (of course)  tuna salad and egg salad on toast.   Tomato costs extra.

When you enter the  back of the pharmacy you are treated to a wonderful little room full of make-up counters.  I am sure they would give you a makeover if you asked nicely.   You can find umbrellas, handbags and other assorted cosmetic gifts.   You can then move over to the great big Hello Kitty display, where you can find almost anything that has the pink kitty’s face plastered on it.   Then there is a standing, turning display wiht games for kids to play in the car.   And I haven’t even begun to tell you about the room full of greeting cards and other gifts that are great for a last minute shower present or a gift for a coworker that is transferring to another branch.

Today when I went to pick up my sandwich, they were even playing an instrumental version of “Moon River” that quite made me want to sing along.

At the lunch counter, several elderly women were dining alone, with their tea and their matzo ball soup and salad and it really made me want to sit down for a spell and join them to find out if all was well with the grandkids.  it seemed a shame to be dining by yourself on such a wonderfully sunny day.

So maybe when I have more time, I will pull out the pipe, the fedora and the cardigan and I will join my friends at Fields.

But for now, I will take my tuna salad an go. I am probably too young for this anyway!

Mischief

I really am a horrible person.

You know the coworker I mentioned yesterday? The one who hates Ms. Garland?

Well, she has gone on vacation for a week and a half.  So, I have set upon the task to decorate her desk.

With Judy Garland Photos.   I found a wonderful site that has a great number of them, and so I printed them up and voila!

I am so going to get it when she gets back.   After all, who else in the office could do such a thing!

Ah, the shenanigans we get up to.

Other than that, I am preparing for my trip to Northern Pa.   I leave Saturday morning.   I hope the drive is peaceful! I think I will listen to some Peggy Lee. Or perhaps Doris Day.   Whatever. I will see what the morning brings!

I hope you all are having a pleasant thursday!

Wednesday Woes

I have made it thus far through the week!

I am very excited because on Saturday I leave to spend a week with my mom  and sister.  My sister is doing fine, she says the chemo is really working.  She has about two months more to go and she should be done.  But she is in really good spirits and that seems to be helping.

I love a week with my mom because I can spend a lot of time doing nothing.  And doing nothing is one thing I do best!   I have a stack of books picked out so I will have them ready to go.

This is the first big trip I will be taking in Mario Kart.  I hope everything goes smoothly!  He drives rather well so I am not really that worried.  I think everything will be fine.

Yesterday I had a little tiff with one of my coworkers.

Apparently, she does not like Judy Garland.

She went so far as to say that she was unattractive and that she couldn’t sing.  And she hates Meet Me in St. Louis.

But she thinks Liza is OK.

Them’s fighting words!

But then I tried to ease matters by talking about Doris Day.   She doesn’t like Calamity Jane, either.

I just can’t win!

Speed Racer

Sorry for the lack of posts.  I was feeling anti-social.   And bummed about my laptop (which is still working, by the way, just slow).    And I was suffering from a lack of interesting things to say.   No anecdotes came to mind.   So, I remained mum.

Anyway,  news on the homefront:  I had to buy a new car.

Chris had a hybrid Civic and the hybrid battery was about to die.  When that happens, you can basically kiss the entire car goodbye, it would have been way to expensive to fix.  And Chris had his car when he still was a cell phone manager and traveling hundreds of miles a day.  So, the mileage was really high.   I drive a 2001 Honda Accord and don’t drive unless I can help it, so the mileage remained really low.  But, it was my turn for the new vehicle so I got to pick the new one.

I decided on a little Scion XD hatchback and it is dark blue and it sure is cute.   Did you ever play the Nintendo game Mario Kart?  Driving the XD is kind of like that.   So,  I get to be Donkey Kong when I drive and when chris is with me he gets to be Diddy Kong.   If I ever get to pick up Tiger Yogi, he will get to be Princess Peach.   I still need to find a Yoshi, unless that is my dog.  It is all quite amusing.

Further amusing complications came when I decided to add an overhead compartment as an accessory.  The thing is right in the center on the ceiling and I tend to  hit my head on it several times a day.  When I get in the car, when I put my seatbelt on, when I retrieve something from the back seat.   I am going to have a goose egg the size of Texas.  And it really doesn’t store that much.  Just trinkets, really.   But it looks kind of cute.  And it has a map light.  Ah, foolish me!

On other news, I joined the committee where I have to read almost every teen book published this calendar year and vote on my favorites, so I am spending an awful lot of time behind the pages of a book.  I know, this is so unlike me.   But I love it and it really helps when having to hand out these books to teens.  And I read some good stuff.  Of the picture, chapter and teen books I tend to like the teen books best.  There is a lot of agony and angst.   And Lord knows I need more angst in my life.

In just five days I leave for a week with my mother and sister!  Yay!  I really need a vacation.

Will try to post more often.   But y’all know me!

Good News!

Guess what!

I read an article today that all the leads of Xanadu: the Musical  have renewed their contracts through january 2009!  So,  you have plenty of time to get to New York and see the show!

I myself am going to find a way to see it again.  I just bought Xanadu: the Book and it is fabulous with great photos and behind the scenes stuff.   Pretty awesome.

That is really all I have for today!  Happy Wednesday!
